Dennis M. Campbell is an educator, theologian, author, and consultant. Dr. Campbell works with non-profit schools and organizations as a consultant advising about governance, management, organization, and planning. He is Vice Chairman of The Duke Endowment, a trustee of the National Humanities Center, a director of the Montpelier Foundation and of The Association of Boarding Schools, of which he is secretary of the board. He is a member of the Headmasters Association.
Most recently he served as Headmaster of Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Virginia from 1997-2015. Before that, he was Dean of the Divinity School and professor of theology at Duke University from 1982 until 1997.
Prior to his appointment as dean, he was professor and college and university administrator. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, from which he holds the A.B. and Ph.D. degrees; and he is a graduate of Yale University Divinity School. A noted speaker and author, Dr. Campbell is widely known for his work in educating for the moral life, ethics, and character formation. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Boys School Coalition and the Membership Commission of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. He is a former chair of WHTJ, the Commonwealth Public Television in Virginia and a former director of FHI 360, an international company devoted to medical and bioethical research and service — especially for women's and children's health. Dr. Campbell and his wife, Leesa, are the parents of two children.
